ABUJA – The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has faulted calls for scrapping of agencies in the Education Ministry, warning that it would further dwindle the fortunes of the sector.

NANS was reacting to a publication by one of national dailies not Vanguard explained that why it was proper for government to cut down the size of government considering the fall in revenue generation, it was only proper that care should be taken before such steps are taken.

In a statement signed by NANS President, Comrade Tijani Usman, the student’s body argued that most of the agencies were set up through legislation for specific purposes, adding that if such agencies had failed, it would not be out of place to assess the performance of heads of such agencies rather than scrapping them out-rightly.

He said; “We are not unaware of the failure of some of these agencies to meet their constitutional responsibilities. As a pressure group, we have over the time queried the performances of some of these agencies to no avail. It is our thinking that the agencies so lagging behind in their responsibilities be strengthened and those existing without legislation be expunged.”

The statement added that the leadership of NANS is also carrying out some level of assessment of performance of these agencies, with a view to making recommendations to Mr. President
