Commuters in Lagos State, especially those in Ikeja axis, on Tuesday, had a hectic day, as the state government and the police impounded over one thousand motorcycles.
The state police command has also advised car owners in the state, especially those who drive Toyota and Honda products to insure their vehicles.
The police and the Lagos State government also put a total ban on the operation of motorcycles, popularly known as okada within Ikeja axis.
The clampdown on motorcycles, the most popular means of transportation around Ikeja, created stress for commuters, as many of them were forced to trek a long distance to their various destinations.
Commuters around Awolowo Way, Oba Akran, Bank Anthony Way, Isaac John, Opebi Link Bridge, Adekunle Fajuyi Way, ACME Road, Alausa, Oregun Kodeso and Simbiat Abiola Way, all in Ikeja, were made to do without okada for most part of Tuesday.
About 1,000 okada were said to have been impounded by the joint task, which included policemen and men of the Special Task Force from the Lagos State government office.
The image maker in charge of the state police command, Mr Joseph Jaiyeoba, while speaking with the Nigerian Tribune, confirmed the impoundment of motorcycles, but claimed not to know the exact number of motorcycles currently impounded by the police.
In a related development, the police in the state have advised car owners in the state to insure their vehicles with reputable insurance companies, as well as providing other security gadget that can neutralise the vehicle while on motion.
